How are Costs Determined?

A long distance move is usually defined as being more than 50 miles from origin to destination.

Many factors determine the final or total investment of a move service: actual weight, distance of transport, pack service, unpack service, third party services, and short or long term storage.

The best way to predetermine how much your move will cost is to have a Jay's Moving Consultant come to your home to perform a visual survey. Be sure to show your representative through every room of your home including the attic and the basement. Go through the garage, garden shed or other storage areas and let the consultant know of any goods stored at another location. Discuss your custom requirements in detail and provide as much information as possible. Our trained and experienced Moving Consultant will be able to accurately estimate the cost of your move based on the Atlas Van Lines' published schedule of tariff rates, actual costs and prevailing market conditions in specific areas.

Pre-Planning Makes for a Successful Move!

Proper pre-planning is the real secret to a successful move. Your Jays representative is a trained, professional moving consultant who will work with you to choose the service options which best meet your needs and your budget.

Your representative can help you to get to know your new community in advance through our concise easy to read city information sheets.

An accurate estimate is the key to budgeting for your move. Jay's can provide you with a detailed cost for your move. For best results, take your representative through every room and storage area making certain to point out items of special value or concern.

Your representative will clearly explain our time transit schedule and will work with you to plan a moving schedule which will meet your family’s requirements.

Your driver is required to collect payment for your move before he unloads your shipment. By calling Jay's a day or so after loading, you can obtain the exact cost so that you can have a certified cheque, travellers cheque or cash drawn. For added convenience, you can make arrangements at origin to pay for your move by Visa or Mastercard.

If you are moving a minimum of 40 km. to start a new job or a business or to attend school as a full time student and are paying for the move yourself, some of your moving expenses may be tax deductible. Call Revenue Canada for the appropriate claim form.

One of the best ways to save money on your move is to dispose of things you don’t use any more. Charges for long distance moves are based on the weight of your household goods so by reducing the weight, you can lower your final costs.


Professional Handling Techniques... Guarantee Maximum Protection!

Think of your Van Operator as your Moving Day Manager. He takes charge of the entire process from start to finish. He knows how to handle your possessions safely and how to load them securely. Loading the van is like doing a giant jig saw puzzle and only a professionally trained van operator has the skill and experience to do it right.

Your Van Operator will take the time to walk through your home with you and to explain the moving process in detail. He will review the inventory listings including his notations regarding pre-existing damage prior to asking you to sign copies of his paperwork. Any questions or areas of concern can be discussed directly with your van operator. Your satisfaction is his primary goal.

For extra protection, your Van operator will pad your staircase banisters and railings before moving any items up or down the stairs.

White and light coloured upholstered furniture is covered with clear plastic and then wrapped carefully in clean, quilted moving blankets.

Thick cushioned moving pads are used to protect your furniture items. Any items which require disassembly are reassembled for you at destination. All hardware pieces are placed in our specially designed “Set-Up” cartons for safe keeping.

Pianos of varying sizes can be moved safely on the Jay's moving van. In some cases, such as with grand or baby grand pianos, pre-move servicing or disassembly by a certified piano technician may be required.

Valuable appliances are carefully padded and then moved on specially designed appliance carts for maximum safety.

Your shipment is carefully loaded and arranged in tiers to ensure that your possessions are packed in tightly so as not to shift during transport.

We maintain a fleet of clean, modern tractor-trailers with all of the proper equipment including clean moving pads, logistic straps and decking bars to ensure safe transport of your valued possessions.

Having Someone to Help you get Settled Makes for a Happier Family!

There are many family pressures and anxieties that accompany a transfer or relocation. At Jay’s we place a great deal of confidence in the ability of our staff and management to handle delicate situations with care. We have the expertise to get you fully settled and more comfortable in your new environment.

When the van arrives at your new residence, the crew will place your furniture where you want it in your new home. They'll carry cartons to the appropriate rooms, unroll rugs and reassemble furniture.

Your neighbourhood destination agent will assign properly trained personnel to unpack any agent packed cartons. Your unpackers will remove every item from the cartons and place them on convenient surfaces so that you can put them away where you want and at your leisure. They will take away any packing materials and debris when they leave. Your Jay's representative can arrange for a full unpack service with items being placed in cupboards and closets at a reasonable extra cost. We can arrange for a visit from a Welcome Wagon hostess who will help orient you to your new community and who will bring you a basket of gifts from local merchants.

In the unlikely event that you sustain any loss or damage on your move, your neighbourhood destination agent will assign an experienced customer service person to arrange for repairs or compensation.
