Mother Nature's Wrath Is No Match For Jay's Calgary at MS Bike Tour 2000
Torrential rains and a hail storm could have ruined the long planned Multiple Sclerosis two day bike tour on the weekend of June 10th and 11th. Thankfully, Jay’s Calgary was able to come to the rescue of many stranded cyclists who took shelter under trees and bushes.
Two of Jay’s trucks were set up to handle the normal logistical transportation requirements of luggage, supplies, etc but due to the inclement weather, they were also called into service to go out on a “search and rescue” mission to pick up many of the cyclists and their bikes and take them to rest areas that had been set up to wait out the storm.
In spite of the rocky start, the event was a huge success with 363 cyclists and over 200 volunteers helping raise over $137,000 for the MS Society of Canada. The funds raised go towards medical research and support services for people afflicted with the disease.
MS Society Recognizes Atlas
For the past ten years, Atlas Van Lines and many of its agents across Canada have been a National Sponsor for the Multiple Sclerosis Society's series of annual Bike Tours. Our contribution of trucks, drivers and volunteers is greatly appreciated by this worthwhile organization. The 1999 MS Bike Tours took place from June to September in eighteen centers. Their goal was to raise approximately 2.6 million dollars. During our decade long involvement, Atlas and its agents have helped the MS Society raise nearly $21.5 million dollars.
The money raised is used to fund many important research projects. One particularly interesting study brings a team of leading epidemiologists from Queen's University and McGill University to look at the environmental factors that may lead to the development of MS Funds are also directed to support services for people suffering from this debilitating disease.
Many Atlas agents have expanded their involvement to include the Super Cities Walks and the annual Carnation Campaign. Atlas Van Lines is very proud of those agents who make the effort to be a part of this important sponsorship. A plaque recognizing this commitment will be presented to Atlas at the MS Society's Annual General Meeting and replicas will be sent to each agent who has participated in these events.
